Our CNU students and Student National Pharmaceutical Association (SNPhA) chapter were recognized nationally at the 2012 SNPhA Annual Meeting, held in Las Vegas, Nevada,  July 20-23, 2012. 

SNPhA/Kroger Patient Counseling Clinical Skills Competition
Second Place Nationally
Cindy Chen (Class of 2013) and Archibong Yellow-Duke (Class of 2013)

48 teams (all local chapter winners) from colleges of pharmacies across the country competed in a two day competition involving a detailed case review, care plan development, and patient consultation.  Based on the high quality of their written plan, Cindy and Archie where among three teams selected to present and defend their care plan to the panel of judges and conduct a detailed patient consultation on many aspects related to the case.  I had the opportunity to observe their presentation and it was outstanding.  Special thanks to Dr. Becky Keel who assisted in couching the teams this year.  Congratulations Cindy and Archie!

SNPhA/Target Business Plan Competition
Fourth Place Nationally
Presented by Payal Patel (Class of 2013), Mariana Ashamalla (Class of 2013), and Paul Gerges (Class of 2013), on behalf of the CNU SNPhA Chapter.

The CNU Chapter Business Plan was 1 of 9 selected from among the 77 SNPhA chapters to the final round and the extended business plan presentation.  Payal, Mariana, and Paul worked very hard to prepare for this competition and to advance the chapter goals this year.  Congratulations Payal, Mariana, Paul, and the CNU SNPhA Chapter!

SNPhA National President, 2012-2013
Pejman Ahmadi (Class of 2013)
As many of you know, Pejman was elected as SNPhA National President-Elect last summer and has served on the national executive board for the last year.  At this year’s meeting, Pejman lead the House of Delegates and many of the Business Meetings.  For 2012-2013, Pejman serves as President and chief executive, responsible for advancing SNPhA’s mission to improve the health, educational, and social environment of underserved communities.   His Presidential Theme as outlined in his address to the conference is "We Need to Get There, Let's Build a Bridge Together."  Congratulations Pejman!

SNPhA Patient Counseling Competition, Regional Competition
As previously announced, Lyna Ly (Class of 2014) and Hang Nguyen (Class of 2014) placed 3rd overall in the SNPhA Patient Counseling Competition, held at the regional meeting in March in Cincinnati, Ohio.   Congratulations again to Lyna and Hang!

Chapter Recognition
Our CNU chapter was also acknowledged for our service in diabetes, smoking cessation, HIV/AIDS, stroke, and immunization community initiatives.  Special thanks to Mariana Ashamalla and Payal Patel (Past Presidents),  Khoa Truong (Current President), and all the current officers and members who helped to make this such a productive year.
An abstract authored by CNUCOP faculty member Dr. Tibebe Woldemariam was submitted and accepted for presentation at the 2012 International Congress on Natural Products Research (ICNPR). Dr. Woldemariam will present the poster abstract entitled “IDENTIFICATION, QUANTIFICATION AND PERMEATION STUDIES OF ROSMARINIC ACID IN PLANT EXTRACTS IDENTIFICATION, QUANTIFICATION AND PERMEATION STUDIES OF ROSMARINIC ACID IN PLANT EXTRACTS.” at the 2012 ICNPR meeting in New York, New York and will be published in the journal, Planta Medica.
CNUCOP’s California Society of Health-System Pharmacists Student Chapter team won 3rd place in the 2011 CSHP Seminar Clinical Quiz Bowl in Anaheim, CA. Congratulations to a great showing of the CNUCOP 2011 CAPSLEAD team at the 2011 California Society of Health-System Pharmacists (CSHP) Seminar poster session entitled "An Analysis of CSHP and CPhA Membership from 2007 to 2010". This year’s CAPSLEAD poster was presented by Daniel Yerekhman, Jason Wong, and Stacy Takayama.
 Dr. Rebecca Keel, Assistant Professor of Clinical Sciences, published a paper entitled, “Pharmacodynamic evaluation of i.v. antimicrobials against Pseudomonas aeruginosa samples collected from U.S. hospitals” in the September 1, 2011 issue of the American Journal of Health System Pharmacists.
Dr. Indiran Pather and Dr. Chandra Kolli obtained a grant of $65 000 from Epiomed Therapeutics Inc. for the development of an injection formulation of the company’s lead compound, ETI 0001. In addition to the financial contribution, the company will supply custom-synthesized drug for the project. The injection will be used in animal toxicity studies and for early stage human testing.  The project also involves the development of a stability-indicating HPLC assay of the drug.
CNUCOP’s SNPhA Chapter was selected as one of the  top three chapters nationally for the Chauncey I. Cooper Chapter Excellence Program for their efforts to promote the goals of SNPhA in the spirit of excellence.
An abstract authored by CNUCOP faculty members Dr. Tibebe Woldemariam and Dr. David Pearson, and CNUCOP students David Pham, Kathy Pham, Linh Puoy, and Kieu Nguyen was submitted and accepted for presentation at the 2011 Annual Conference for the American Society for Pharmacognosy (ASP).  The faculty and students will present their poster EVALUATION OF THE ANTI-TUMOUR ACTIVITY OF SELECTED HERBS AND SPICES at the San Diego conference at the end of July.

Eight CNUCOP students attended the California Pharmacy Student Leadership Conference with faculty advisors Dr. Sonya Frausto, and Assistant Dean Cyndi Porter on March 4-6, 2011 in Pasadena, California. All eight California pharmacy schools participate in the conference where teams from each school are assigned a research project. The students work on the project during the year and present their research posters at several conferences including CSHP, CPhA Outlook, and APhA.

California Northstate University Student Pharmacist Named Recipient of Prestigious Beckerman Scholarship
Dr. Nilesh Bhutada was recently interviewed over the phone by Madison Park from CNN Health regarding a report she was working.  Her story has been published online on CNN Health
Assessing critical thinking
Dr. Nilesh Bhutada presented his research work entitled “Impact of Celebrity Endorsements in Prescription Drug Advertising on Consumers’ Attitudes and Behaviors” at the 29th Association for Marketing & Health Care Research Annual Meeting and Conference, February 24-26, 2010, Lake Tahoe, CA.
Dr. Chandra Sekhar Kolli’s research work entitled “Transdermal Iontophoretic Delivery of Selegiline Hydrochloride, In Vitro” has been accepted for publication in Journal of Drug Targeting.
Dr. Nilesh Bhutada's article titled “Consumers Responses to Coupons in Direct-to-Consumer Advertising of Prescription Drugs” has been published in Health Marking Quarterly.
Dr. Sonya Fausto has been selected to be one of the eight fellows in the inaugural 2009/2010 class of Pharmacy Forward: Pharmacy Leadership for Reproductive Health.
Dr. Parto Khansari published a paper with a colleague titled "Evidence for Neuroprotection by the Fenamate NSAID, Mefenamic Acid" in the Journal of Neurochemistry International, Volume 55 pages 683–688, 2009 and a paper entitled "Combination Therapy: A Logical Strategy for the Treatment of Ischemic Stroke" with Dean David Hawkins, which appeared as an invited electronic publication. P-2 students Christine Guirgius and Maureen Shelley presented a poster titled "Value of First-Year Pharmacy Students Exploring Clinical Pharmacists' Role by Attending ACCP- Related Regional, National, and International Conferences" at the 30th Annual American College of Clinical Pharmacy Meeting in Anaheim, California on October 19, 2009.
